Reel, whirl, stagger, totter, lurch, teeter significan moverse o parecer moverse, de modo incierto e irregular y con la pérdida de control típica de la debilidad extrema o la intoxicación.
Reel suele connotar el dar vueltas y vueltas, o la sensación de girar de esta manera o de ser girado, pero puede indicar también el perder el equilibrio <the boxer reeled from the blow>.
Whirl suele usarse como reel <his thoughts were whirling in confusion>, pero indica con mayor frecuencia rapidez o ímpetu de movimiento <dancers whirling about the stage>.
Stagger recalca la pérdida de control y la incertidumbre de movimiento típicos de una persona que está caminando al estar débil, intoxicada o al llevar una gran carga, pero puede aplicarse asimismo a una persona que está enfrentándose con una dificultad o con condiciones adversas <a man staggered drunkenly out of the club>.
Totter no sólo indica debilidad o inestabilidad que causa un movimiento incierto, sino también suele dar a entender que se aproxima un colapso total <he felt the regime was now tottering>.
Lurch sugiere moverse o caminar mientras cabecea o tropieza de manera descontrolada <she lost her balance and lurched into the counter> y puede usarse en un sentido no físico <the economy seemed to be lurching toward recession>.
Teeter connota tambalearse <she teetered down the street in her high heels> o titubear <two countries teetering on the brink of war>.
